Full support for Windows 8.1, at last!

Microsoft windows 8 support

Wait, what? Did you say Windows 8.1?

Yes! Earlier this year we wrote about why we don’t support Windows 8 (yet). As you will recall, we also made a promise that the wait would be worth it… and it is.

We’ve actually got so many awesome new things in this release that we had to leave a bunch of minor items out of the release notes in an attempt to keep things brief.

What does Windows 8.1 support mean for you?

Many good things. You can now run Warewolf ESB on your Windows 8.1 machine. No strange exceptions, no limited functionality (for those who tried to run it anyway), just all the Warewolf awesomeness and more. On the server side, this means Warewolf also runs on Windows Server 2012.

We’ve also added APIs.json discovery to the server (to make Kin Lane happy).  We also added a .API extension for services to give consumption information. Read more about Swagger and APIs.json.

On the logging side, we’ve made logging fully asynchronous. This means huge a huge performance boost, even when logging set to Info – something in the region of 20 times faster than before!

New tools

Take a look in the toolbox and you will see a pack of awesome new tools to manage Microsoft SharePoint and SharePoint Online lists. You can Create List Item, Read List Item, Update List Item and Delete List Item directly inside Warewolf.

XML mapping has been upgraded to allow for ATOM XML, this vastly increases compatibility with SharePoint.

Other upgrades

The Create JSON tool now lets you create a JSON payload on the go.

On the performance side, the Studio to Server communication has had a big speed up thanks to an upgrade in SignalR. It even includes backward compatibility, how cool is that?

More on the performance side, we’ve adjusted our looping constructs to give us a massive boost and reduce the chance of stack overflow.

There is now a timeout option for the Web Request Tool. All time controls have also been formatted to be the same in every instance:

  • Calculate =now()
  • Date and Time (blank time fields)
  • Date and Time Difference (blank time fields)
  • System Info – Date and Time, now all give the system format plus milliseconds for time

As well as numerous bug fixes, especially in the area of Tooling and Debug Output. If all this is not enough for you, why not add your upgrades to the codebase?
