Why we don’t support Windows 8 (yet)

We have had a couple people asking us why we don’t support Windows 8 and above. While users on Windows 8 and above can still install and run Warewolf, there are odd exceptions and we don’t recommend it.

Currently Warewolf is built for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. We do extensive testing in these environments to ensure it’s fully stable and performant.

When you download the compiled version from our website you will see a notice warning you that we only support Windows 7 and Server 2008. Similarly, there is a note on the Readme for our GitHub users. But we’re excitable creatures, and most people miss these important bits.

When will we support Windows 8?

We’re currently in the midst of a massive system rewrite (read more about it here). The new system will be fully tested on Windows 8 and above, and we will start supporting those machines.

If you’re a Windows 8 user and would like to see this happening faster, please feel free to join us in the code base and contribute to all the other Windows 8 users out there.

The wait will be worth it, we promise!
