Thorough Uninstall

The Warewolf installer is supposed to be a convenient way for Warewolf administrators to deploy Warewolf server and the desktop version of the studio without redeploying all their workflows and settings. But, if you’re seeing this error while trying to update an existing installation:

If you have already tried the troubleshooting steps in that error message then you might need to perform a more thorough uninstall, just so you can install again starting fresh.

The steps for this involve:

  1. Using add/remove programs to try to uninstall.
    1. If that fails then delete any keys in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall for Warewolf.
  2. Make sure the server service is stopped:
    1. By right clicking on start and selecting the Task Manager, then navigating to the services section, right clicking on Warewolf in the list of services and selecting stop.
    2. Or using this powershell command: sc.exe stop “Warewolf Server”
  3. Make sure the Warewolf server process is killed:
    1. By right clicking on start and selecting the Task Manager, then navigating to the details section, right clicking on Warewolf Server.exe in the list of exe’s and selecting End task.
    2. Or using this command: taskkill /im /f “Warewolf Server.exe”
  4. Backup (you might need to replace %programdata%\Warewolf with the configured Warewolf server workspace if you are not using the default directory)
    1. %programdata%\Warewolf
  5. Delete or otherwise backup the following directories (for example by moving or renaming them):
    1. %programfiles(x86)%\Warewolf
    2. %programdata%\Warewolf
    3. %localappdata%\Warewolf
  6. Restore
    1. %programdata%\Warewolf
  7. Then re-run the installer.
  8. If you are still having problems make sure you are using a supported installer. Only releases on the releases page are supported.
  9. Check your server log file at “%programdata%\Warewolf\Server Log\wareWolf-Server.log” for errors.
